Vodou Nation...
review The house is full and the stage is set for a cast of sixteen Haitian musicians and dancers to celebrate 200 years of Haitian independence, taking us through the history of the Vodou Nation. The band is fabulous, and the voices of the cast superb. Haunting solo cries for, one assumes, help or victory or sorrow. African harmonies that chill and thrill in equal measures... I must admit that the activity on stage is somewhat baffling though. I'd done my research and read the introduction that's projected at the start of the show, but I'm lost somewhere between the pirate's ship and the projected images of rollerblades. Having said that, it really doesn't seem to matter. It becomes absolutely obvious when something good is happening - the lights are cheerful and images of happy things are projected onto the huge screen. And, similarly, when it's all going pearshaped everything is menacing and green and... well, you get the idea. I'm not sure I understand the Vodou religion any better, but perhaps that wasn't the point? Perhaps it's enough that my curiosity is piqued, my mind opened and my senses entertained with light and colour and fabulous music... Vodou Nation is playing at the Brighton Dome from 13th July to 17th July 2004.
