review Ah, the Delays! So lovely... All youthful indie rock swagger on stage, while creating the most contradictory beautiful melodies ablaze with helplessly romantic vocal harmonies. Greg Gilbert’s falsetto - Liz Fraser channelling Jeff Buckley in The La’s shower - is breathtaking when left free to swoop and soar in ‘Wanderlust’, less other-worldly in more La’s / 60s boybeat tunes like ‘Hey Girl’.And they’re not a bit like The Corrs if you shut your eyes, even if The Guardian say so. OK, a little bit. But then you open your eyes and the stage is resplendent with cherubic indie lovelies and all thoughts of the evil Irish soft-rock quartet are banished. Phew. They kick off with ‘Bedroom Scene’ and ‘Wanderlust’, play much of the album, and a couple of new songs about girls are introduced, ‘Lydia’ and ‘Angel’ (“but we don’t want to call it that," adds Greg helpfully). Encore includes a sublime ‘Nearer Than Heaven’, Greg’s falsetto reaching giddy new heights of loveliness. Swoooon...
