Saint Etienne...
review Few current pop bands can be accused of being classy. Yes, we all loved watching Cheryl Tweedy being arrested for beating up a toilet attendant, but there comes a time when you want a bit of class to your pop - and then we turn to Saint Etienne.Arriving at Concorde 2, I was pleasantly surprised not to be among the oldest people present, as normally happens to me at gigs (I’m only 21, honest!). As Saint Etienne ambled onto the stage there was no surge forward from sweaty youths, just a collective smile from people reminiscing about their teenage years. They are a band that you’ve always known were there, but you’re never quite sure what they've been up to lately. Wasting no time at all, they launched into a number of new tunes which seemed to pleasantly surprise the bouncing crowd. But it was the classic Saint Etienne fare that got us all singing along with 'Like a Motorway' and 'Who Do You Think You Are?'. Sarah Cracknell's voice could barely be heard above the crowd when she launched into 'Only Love Can Break Your Heart'. Ending with camp classic 'She's On the Phone', the band headed off for Shepherds Bush to host their own New Years Eve party. As we left, I couldn't help thinking that it is high time Saint Etienne hit the charts again. Sarah Cracknell may not date footballers and won't be seen falling out of Chinawhites at 4am, but we'll keep on smiling as long as she's around.
